Right now, the cutting is not doing so great, but I carried out the trial anyway and wanted to share the process with you so we can learn together.
🔬 Technical Background: Asexual Propagation
Propagating plants via cuttings is a method of vegetative (asexual) reproduction. The main advantage of
this technique is that the new plant will be a genetic clone, inheriting identical botanical
characteristics to the mother plant.
✂️ Step-by-Step Cutting Process:
To prepare a Jasminum polyanthum cutting properly, we must prune specific parts to stop energy waste and
dehydration:
Selecting the stem: Choose a healthy stem containing leaves and flower buds.
Pruning flowers: Cut off all flowers and buds. Blooming demands a huge amount of energy that the
stem
needs to focus entirely on root development.
Pruning lower leaves: Remove the basal leaves (lower leaves) to clear the nodes that will be
buried, as
roots will sprout from these nodes.
Substrate Preparation: A pot with a sandy organic substrate (blend of sand, peat moss, and worm
castings) was selected. Sand provides great drainage and aeration, preventing root rot.
Planting: Moisten the soil, insert the bottom portion of the cutting, and gently press the
substrate
around
Humidity Dome: Cover the cutting with a clear, inverted plastic bottle acting as a
mini-greenhouse dome
to preserve moisture.
Placement: Place the pot in a sheltered, shaded area.
